Objectives

The “Humanities, Society and Artificial Intelligence” collegium, or HumaniSIA, aims at developing a community of researchers from diverse backgrounds who are interested in the convergence of various research fields around the ethical, social, and environmental aspects of artificial intelligence.

This collegium will organize and support the organization of conferences. It will participate in the work of other AFIA colleges and contribute to the dissemination of knowledge for the benefit of the general public. It will promote young researchers and support their training by encouraging them to take part in the activities of this collegium and, more broadly, those of AFIA.

This collegium is particularly involved with the risks that may arise in terms of environmental impact and management of essential resources, inequality, employment, discrimination, and all forms of exclusion that could result from careless or deliberately harmful use of artificial intelligence in our societies and democracies.

Work plan for the years 2024 – 2026

The action plan for the years 2024–2026 will be primarily dedicated to building the HumaniSIA community both within and beyond AFIA.

To this end, we will actively take part to AFIA events:

  • The Artificial Intelligence Platform (PFIA), which brings together AI researchers once a year and which we will strive to promote among other academic disciplines.
  • The thematic days organized by AFIA colleges that share our approach.

Outside of AFIA, we intend to develop collaborations with learned societies already working along with AFIA to help raise awareness of AFIA among researchers from other disciplines and expand its influence. Initial collaborations are planned with:

  • The Artificial Evolution Association,
  • The Francophone Association for Human-Machine Interaction (AFIHM),
  • The CNRS research group on Reasoning, Learning, and Decision in Artificial Intelligence (RADIA).

To encourage young researchers to join AFIA, we also plan to support the organization of a doctoral symposium focused on a cross-disciplinary approach to AI.

Achieved activities to date:

  • Spring 2025: Joint AFIA-AFIHM event in Lille. Key themes will include the societal impact of AI (explainability and its use in criminal justice) as well as the use of AI in artistic creation, notably addressing copyright issues and energy consumption.
  • July 2025: Participation in the AI Platform in Dijon, organized by AFIA. The core topic was dedicated to the role of AI in the transformation of expert roles.
